A power transformer is an electric instrument which through electromagnetic induction, is used to transfer electric power within two or more electrical ciruits.
 

It is a static device, meaning it has no moving parts. Power transformers are commonly used in electrical power transmission and distribution systems to step up or step down the voltage levels of electricity. The primary function of a power transformer is to change the voltage level of alternating current (AC) electricity. It consists of two or more coils of insulated wire wound around a laminated iron core. The coil connected to the power source is called the primary winding, while the coil connected to the load is called the secondary winding.
